JEKray, for teaching and research

JEKray is an optical bench simulator that runs in the browser. Students and researchers place sources, lenses, mirrors, fibres and other parts on a virtual breadboard and see the light traced through them as they move them.

• Exact rays through real glass: spherical, conic and aspheric surfaces, real glass dispersion, Fresnel losses and coatings; spot size, wavefront error, MTF and Seidel aberrations.
• Waves as well as rays: Gaussian beams through every branch of a system, and the diffracted field propagated surface by surface, so interferometers, double slits and standing waves behave as they should.
• Cavities, polarisation, fibres and signals: resonators found and analysed automatically, fibre networks, detectors and the electronics between them.
• Optical traps: trap depth and frequencies for atoms and dielectric particles, in vacuum, gas or water.

JEKray itself is free for everyone. It is used for lab design, for teaching optics, and for setting exercises that students can open with one link.

How a university licence works

• Everyone is covered automatically. Anyone who signs in with their university Microsoft account or a verified university email address gets JEKrayPro, and your administrators can invite anyone else. There are no seats to assign and no accounts to create for people.
• Choose a tier, with no extra charges. The price is set by how many people may use JEKrayPro in any 12 months. When every place is taken, someone new joins once a place frees: anyone who has not used it for a year frees theirs, or you can take someone off. You can move to a larger tier at any time.
• Look after it yourselves. Your licence administrators see the number of active users each month, invite visitors who have no university address, and take people off. They see counts only, never who the users are.
• Invoiced once a year, with your purchase order number, payable by bank transfer within 30 days. No automatic renewal: each year is agreed with you.
• Nothing is lost when a licence ends. People keep their accounts and can open and export all their benches.
